Who Inspires You?
If you’re lucky, you’ve come across a person in your lifetime that has truly inspired you, someone who has had a positive influence on your life. We need these people to lean on, to emulate, and to motivate us. Whether they make us reach higher, dig deeper, or give it our all just one last time - these individuals act as our personal “everyday heroes” that help us strive to be the very best that we can.
Rushie McLeod is and always will be my inspiration. She was Rob’s grandmother and we were like sisters from the day we met. She lived in a Tampa fish farm that she built with her husband and worked out of until the day he passed. We called her “Granny”, and she was the kindest person I have ever known. She would sing a chipper “yoohoo?” when someone knocked on her door and her white hair could be seen from a mile away.
What I loved about her was, no matter where Rob and I were in our life, Granny always took us in. She never criticized us, she made sure we had a roof over our heads, a hefty plate of food, and all the wisdom in the world. Over all, what I admired the most was that she wouldn’t let us feel sorry for ourselves, rather, she’d give us the motivation that made us believe that we could truly make it on our own. And you know what? She was right, we always made it out just fine.
The last time we spoke to Granny, Rob and I were doing well. As we left her house for our next adventure, we never thought that would be the last time we’d see her. I’m grateful that she finally saw us at a good point in our lives. I feel that in her mind, she felt like she had done her job. We couldn’t make it to her funeral, but I believe she would have wanted it that way.
I owe every ounce of kindness I possess to a great woman whom I consider my inspiration. Her name was Rushie McLeod, and I love her in the largest of ways.
Do you have someone that inspires you? I would love to hear about them and why they are extraordinary. Write me in the comments section below! I hope everyone’s week is starting off productively and I looking forward to talking to you all tomorrow! I’ll bring the coffee. -R.
